BASIC INTERNET HOW TO'S
1. The “Internet” is a way to connect to various websites which is accomplished through the WWW (World Wide Web) and access through an internet “browser”.
2. A “browser” is used as a connection source to log on to the internet. There are several browsers you can use; some of the most popular are as follows (for ease of access Internet Explorer and Google Chrome will be used*):
-
Google Chrome*
-
Internet Explorer *
-
Mozilla/Firefox*
-
Yahoo*
-
AOL (which has its own “source” browser)*
-
Bing
-
Edge
3. Basic steps to access the internet and its resources:
1. Double click the browser icon (Google Chrome/Internet Explorer, etc.) with the left side of the mouse which will open the “browser”.
2. At the very top left-hand side you will see a blank “bar” this is called the URL which stands for “Universal Resource Library (Locator)”; this is the address of a web page. Each page has its own unique web address (URL). This is how the computer locates the web page you are trying to find. An example of a URL would be http://funbrain.com/index.html. In this example URL, “funbrain.com” is called the domain name, the “index.html” refers to the specific page at that particular website.
3. You log onto the “internet” using a “browser”. However, you can choose another “search engine”, such as Google, MSN, Yahoo, AOL etc. For easy reference we will use Google and Internet Explorer as the referenced “search engines”*.
4. In the “search” area you will then type in the “website” you are looking for if you know what it is; i.e. Mid Valley Regional Library and press the ENTER on the keyboard. A list of “website hits” will be displayed. You would then choose the one that is pertinent to your search. Click on the website “link” (website “links” are provided solely to obtain further information about relevant products and organizations that your search generated).
5. The “link” will now open to the Mid Valley Regional Library “home page”; within that “home page” you will see other various “links” to the Library’s resources; i.e. reserve a computer, online classes, etc.
6. When you click on one of those “links” it will take you to another “link” that contains the information in that particular category and you can continue your research as needed.
7. Note: When doing “online” shopping; be VERY SURE that in the URL at the top of the page, it shows “https”; which indicates that the site is secure and your credit card information is protected. You can safely shop for books, computers, cameras, office supplies, etc.
